It was around three weeks ago when I received the text that made cry.
“You got it, you got DISNEY,” messaged my amazing agent Emily.
I could barely get the words out when I called Jason at work to tell him the great news.
“What’s wrong? Are the girls’ okay??? he asked.
Between sobs, I managed to get out two little words: “It’s happening…”
Rewind to three years ago: I was jobless, bored and missing that sense of community that came with being a reporter, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and start a blog.
Honestly, this little ol’ Valley Mom was just excited to create another platform to share her Pink Laundry columns that were appearing in Black Press publications once a month, review businesses and highlight some amazing local moms making a difference in the community. If I was to make a little extra income or get an invite to a fun event, all the better.
“Maybe you’ll become like a really big blogger one day,” said Jason, the night ValleyMom.ca (formerly She’s a Valley Mom) went live. I had been logging some serious hours at the keyboard late at night when my family was sound asleep.
For me, the ‘big-time’ meant a media trip to the happiest place on Earth – DISNEYLAND!
But how???
“If Disney was to ever call, I’d officially retire and start writing a book about my adventures in blogging,” I joked, never thinking in a billion years it would actually happen.
Except, you know what?
Dreams do come true.
I have wished on every loose eyelash, birthday candle and shooting star that this would someday transpire…
Tomorrow morning, my mother-in-law is coming to pick our family up and drive the four of us to YVR airport. Molly and Zoe think they’re going to be saying goodbye to Mommy (they’ve been told I’m flying out on a business trip to Calgary). Shh… it has been so tough to keep this under raps the past 28 days.
What they don’t know, is that Daddy will be rolling up their little pink suitcases and delivering the news we’re going on the PR adventure of a lifetime to Disneyland for Mommy’s blog.
This will be the first time at Disneyland for both my girls and Jason. I haven’t been since I was a kid. I hear a lot has changed.
Back in the 90’s, my family drove to California and parked our rented motor home in the Walmart parking lot close by.
For this trip, we’ve been invited to stay in one of my bucket list hotels – Disney’s Grand California Hotel & Spa.
The gorgeous hotel has its own entrance to Disney California Adventure Park and offers an array of impressive amenities including: luxurious dining experiences, a world-class spa and pool. Rumour has it, this is where Johnny Depp and Julie Andrews recently stayed (obviously, not together… that would be awkward).
As a family, our assignment from Disney is to experience and highlight the amazing holiday transformation that has recently taken place at the resort.
Here’s just a quick sampling of how we’ll be ‘Jingling All the Way’ through Disneyland & California Adventure for the next few days.
DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
Festival of Holidays– The new Festival of Holidays celebrates time-honoured traditions and heartwarming experiences inspired by holiday festivals around the world. We will discover something fun around every corner – from delicious, internationally inspired food and beverages at 14 themed festival marketplaces to music, dance and diverse cultural holiday celebrations, including the popular Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Guess this Valley Mom had best bring her stretchy pants, hey?
“World of Color – Season of Light”– The all-new nighttime spectacular, “World of Color – Season of Light,” is said to immerse guests in the warmth and heartfelt spirit of the holidays. I’ve read that a powerful fountains shoot water up to 200 feet high, creating massive water screens to take guests through a sparkling winter fantasy. Molly and Zoe are going to LOVE the classic holiday songs, humor and memorable moments from treasured Disney animated films.
Princess Elena – Princess Elena, the first Disney Princess inspired by diverse Latin American cultures, is said to make her Disneyland Resort debut in a colourful cavalcade during the Festival of Holidays. The brave teenager from the Disney Channel series “Elena of Avalor” will perform musical numbers and also meet with guests in a character greeting area in the park. Molly is absolutely obsessed with Elena – I hope we can meet with her and have her sign their autograph books!!!
DISNEYLAND PARK
Guests return to Disneyland park year after year to experience beloved Holiday traditions, from “A Christmas Fantasy” parade to glistening décor, Disney-themed treats and holiday entertainment, but this will be a first time for us. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for the one-of-a-kind transformations that create “it’s a small world” Holiday, Jingle Cruise and Haunted Mansion Holiday.
Word on the street is thatSleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle returns for the first time since 2014, with magical nighttime snowfall moments that conclude with “Believe … in Holiday Magic” fireworks and its stirring snowfall finale.
My mom and brother will be staying at our house to pet sit our fur babies, so we’ll be sure to bring them home something extra special and ‘Christmassy’ for their stockings this year. And no, there’s no way I can retire from blogging now. As for that book, I guess I better get cracking, but first — Disneyland here we come!
