Celebrate Family Day at the Historic Stewart Farm

This year marks the sixth annual Family Day in British Columbia. Spend it with your clan by going back in time for a unique family experience at the Historic Stewart Farm in South Surrey.

On Monday, Feb. 12, from noon until 3 p.m., the popular historic landmark will host a free, fun-filled drop-in event for all ages, including an opportunity to discover the various flags, tartans and coat of arms families once used to represent themselves.

Visitors can even make a family crest of their own to take home as a keepsake.

“We are thrilled to be hosting another Family Day event here at the farm,” said Jerrilin Spence, curator at the site.

“This holiday is a great opportunity for families to unplug, spend some quality time together and reflect on their heritage. Family is a team, and every team needs a flag! What better way to do this than create your own modern day family crest?”

In addition to celebrating one’s own ancestry, visitors are encourage to explore the picturesque grounds and charming farm house, which tells the story of an early Surrey pioneer family (the Stewarts) that lived on the site from 1889 to 1994.

“While the farmhouse seems lavish to us today, it was a modest house in its time period,” said Spence.

Scottish-born John Stewart, his wife Annie Stewart and their sons William James and John Massey lived in the house and worked the land along the Nicomekl River.

“With just two children, they were a unique family who had to work especially hard to get the same amount of work done as most of the larger local families.”

When you open the original stained glass door, the smell of baking on the wood stove will invite you in. Costumed staff will greet you, offering information and a tour or the option to tour on your own. The antique floor boards will creak beneath your step as you imagine a family laughing, dining and living in the house.

With scenic water views and lots of space for children to run on the property, the Historic Stewart Farm offers all the makings of a memorable Family Day.

The Family Day Drop In experience at Historic Stewart Farm also include a guided tour of the house, pioneer children’s games, the chance to play with dress up clothes and old fashioned toys upstairs and samples of baking from the woodstove.
