Vancouver is Alive With The Sound of Music

Calling all fellow theatre lovers, a brand new production of The Sound of Music is playing in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until Sept. 17.

Molly and I had the chance to take in the show on opening night for an extra special mother-daughter date, witnessing the spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family firsthand.

I’m so lucky to have a daughter who appreciates theatre as much as I do!

Both of us are also big fans of the classic film — especially the catchy tunes, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss,” and of course, the title song.

While the story has a mature themes of love, war and religion, Molly was enchanted by the singing and exceptionally talented youthful cast.

Set in Austria on the eve of World War II, The Sound of Music tells the story of the musical von Trapp family and the nun who becomes their nanny and eventual step-mother.

Jill-Christine Wiley as Maria Rainer and Mike McLean as Captain Georg von Trapp have some incredible steamy onstage chemistry that makes you wonder if they’re an item in real life.

Lauren Kidwell plays The Mother Abbess, Jake Mills has been cast as Max Detweiler, Melissa McKamie as Elsa Schraeder, Chad Campbell as Rolf Gruber and Keslie Ward as Liesl. The von Trapp children are played by Landon Brimacombe (Friedrich), Arick Brooks (Kurt), Katie Grgecic (Brigitta), Madeleine Guilbot (Gretl), Maya Karp (Louisa) and Amaryllis C. Miller (Marta).

The Sound of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December 2013 (seen by over 44 million people); 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
