Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing or romantic date night, look no further than Vancouver’s seasonal theatrical experience — Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS).
Founded in 1940, the not-for-profit organization has spent over 75 years bringing soaring works of song & dance to Stanley Park.
We had the pleasure of watching the Disney classic, Mary Poppins, come to life onstage in a magical performance that was truly Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Thinking about checking it out for yourself? Here are just 6 reasons we love Theatre Under the Stars and recommend you add a visit to your summer bucket list for 2017.
1- Truly Unique Experience
So much more than just a night at the theatre, Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) interweaves a kaleidoscope of elements – setting, scenery, concessions, and quality art – into a fun, encompassing experience nestled among awe-inspiring Douglas Firs.
We loved cuddling up under a blanket with a hot chocolate in hand (Nana had wine) as the sun slowly faded on the horizon.
2- Great Lineup of Shows
Mary Poppins was our introduction to Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
From the gravity defying special effects to the catchy classics like ‘A Spoonful of Sugar,’ Chim Chim Cher-ee,’ and ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite,’ my girls, Molly, 8, and Zoe, were captivated the entire performance — myself included!
And while I’ve seen the Disney hit countless times on the small screen, it was refreshing to see a unique spin on the film, which included brand-new dance numbers and spectacular stage-craft.
In addition to Mary Poppins, which runs until August 18, Theatre Under the Stars will also feature The Drowsy Chaperone this summer until August 19.
Bursting with show-stopping song and dance – this Canadian musical parody & five-time Tony Award winner whisks audiences away on a Jazz Age journey of love, laughter, and libation.
Note: The Drowsy Chaperone is a saucy tale of Jazz Age libation. It contains cheeky innuendo & tongue-in-cheek content that may not be appropriate for little ones. Date night, perhaps?

3- Affordability Factor
Let’s face it, a night at the theatre for the whole family can get pretty costly. Fortunately, you won’t have to break the bank to attend this alfresco production. Tickets range from $20 (for preview nights only) to $49.
4- A Slice of Vancouver History
Did you know that Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) dates all the way back to 1940? It all began when a group of local theatre people formed to produce professional quality musicals during the summer. Since then, TUTS has been a Lower Mainland tradition, delighting generations of locals and tourists alike under the stars.
5- For a Good Cause
Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) is a not for profit society that entertains families through popular musical theatre shows while providing a vibrant outlet and training ground to develop amateur performers and technicians both young and old. TUTS values an atmosphere of inclusion and mentorship in order to build strong character and to promote positive values.
6. Tasty Nibbles & Sips
We didn’t have time f0r dinner before the show, but sure enjoyed the Grilled Salmon Dinner for $12.50, which was served fresh with a mango ginger glaze, green salad and a potato skewer. There are various healthy options provided by BUTLER DID IT CATERING at a reasonable price. The Garden Cafe opens 60 minutes before showtime and during intermission. There is also bar service that offers wine and beer.
