We were so excited to head downtown after school on Tuesday for a very special family night beyond the Valley — to see Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA.
Jason left work a little early so we could go for dinner beforehand and make a whole big experience out of it. I love that with the new toll bridge, it only takes around 40 minutes to get there from where we live in Langley.
This was Molly’s second musical, but would be Zoe’s first experience. To be honest, I was a wee nervous that she’d start getting fidgety an hour into the production — especially since this musical wouldn’t be anything like the Disney version she’s used to.
Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA is the Tony Award®-winning musical from the creators of South Pacific and The Sound of Music that delivers a contemporary take on the classic tale and the notion of ‘happily ever after.’
The second we stepped into the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, we all knew we were in for a special treat.
Above us was pitch black with thousands of little twinkling white lights that looked like stars. Onstage, awaited a lush, majestical forest setting where the story would begin. Looking around us, it was so cute to see lots of little theatre goers dressed up in gowns and tiaras who were giddy with anticipation.
Aside from the incredible orchestra, singing and dancing, we were all blown away by the jaw-dropping transformations — especially when Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother transformed her into the Belle of the ball with the flick of her wand. I’m still not sure how they managed to pull that off so quickly.
The musical had all the moments of the fairytale that my girls know and love, such as the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball and more, but there were also some surprising new twists to keep all ages entertained.
I also really liked the message for young girls and boys — that “It’s Possible” for your dreams to come true.
My personal favourite character was one of the stepsisters (in the pink dress above). She was hilarious and had the audience in fits of laughter every time she opened her mouth to say a line.
If you’d like to be transported back to your childhood to rediscover some of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago” in this hilarious and romantic experience for anyone who’s ever had a dream, it’s not too late!
