Put Your Best Face Forward With Microdermabrasion

While I’ve never been a sun worshipper and do practice a strict skin care regimen, little laugh lines have begun to make their appearance on my face. I’ve also noticed that youthful glow seems to have vanished at some point.

Motherhood, chardonnay and being in your 30’s will do that to you, according to my own mother. All three factors are probably true, but I’m all about finding ways to slow down the aging process without going to drastic measures.

After doing the school drop off’s a couple of weeks ago, I popped into the Su Casa Spa & Laser in Fort Langley for my very first Microdermabrasion facial, which is a gentler alternative to more traumatic resurfacing treatments.

Su Casa Spa & Laser is one of my favourite destinations to unwind and feel pampered from head-to-toe. This full-service day spa is located in a beautiful, intimate setting, offering everything from couples’ massage, manicures, pedicures and microdermabrasion to facials and laser hair removal.

Owner Sandra Jimenez has built a reputation on providing her clients with the utmost in cleanliness and safety, which is especially important for those seeking Microdermabrasian.

While it might sound a little scary, Microdermabrasion is a progressive, safe, non-invasive procedure that propels natural mineral (Corundum) crystals onto the surface of the skin for gentle epidermal abrasion that reveals newer, healthier and younger looking skin.

This popular procedure works in two ways:
1. Correction – The speed of the crystal flow causes an abrasive action that gently removes 30% to 50% of the surface layers of the epidermis formed by dead cells.
2.Stimulation – The vacuum action helps to stimulate microcirculation, increasing the blood supply that provides nutrients needed for regeneration. It also stimulates formation of new collagen and elastin to improve skin texture and elasticity.

Jimenez explained that the little wand would feel like a cat’s tongue licking my face, which was a pretty bang-on description. The sensation was a little strange at first, but definitely not painful or irritating at all. Some experience a slight sensation resembling a light sunburn, she noted.

With soothing spa music playing in the background, candles flickering and the lights dim, I felt just as relaxed as I do during any regular spa facial treatment.

My reason for choosing Microdermabrasion was to reveal smoother, younger looking skin, but this quick ‘lunch-time’ facial is used for a variety of skin types and problems, including:

• Sun damaged skin
• Uneven and granular skin
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Enlarged pores
• Blackheads and comedones
• Sensitive
• Couperose
• Superficial scars
• Some stretch marks

The entire process was under 40 minutes and the results were amazing. I still can’t  believe how soft and supple my skin feels. I noticed that most of the blackheads on my nose have since disappeared and any redness or discolouration is gone. Several people have told me that my face looks so vibrant and clear these days. And want to know the best part? I haven’t felt the need to wear foundation anymore — just a few dabs of concealer under my eyes and I’m good to go. As you can see, the bags under my eyes are a whole other story, but I guess I can chalk that up to being a tired Valley Mom these days.

Some say microdermabrasion facials  are addicting, and I can definitely see why. To achieve optimum results, most will have to go back for additional sessions, says Jimenez.

“Age and skin condition determine the number of treatments required. For most skin disorders, a minimum of six Microdermabrasion treatments are recommended. Results can be seen in both the texture and appearance of the skin after just one treatment. An initial series of treatments, combined with maintenance will result in better skin quality.”

Microdermabrasion at Su Casa Spa & Laser is usually $150 per session, but it’s on sale for October and November for $125.
