Coffee With Karen Lee Batten: Country Rocks Her Soul

For Karen Lee Batten, music is all about honesty. Every word she sings is filled with raw, genuine emotion, and this commitment to sincerity is at the heart of her new album, Cause a Scene.

The British Columbia-based Batten has consistently wowed audiences across the country with her soaring and impeccable singing. She was a top ten finalist on Canadian Idol, and she’s a three-time winner of the British Columbia Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year award — just to name a few.

On Oct. 19, she’ll perform onstage at the BC Country Music Association Awards, where she has also been nominated for seven awards, including: Album, Entertainer, Female Vocalist, Video, Single, Website and Fan’s Choice.

In this week’s edition of ‘Coffee With,’ this curly-haired songstress with a voice as smooth as liquid honey discusses the evolution of her music career, her roots in the Fraser Valley and offers some sage advice for aspiring musicians.

Tell us a bit about where you grew up?
I kind of grew up in Abbotsford, B.C. and Kelowna B.C. Abbotsford only till I was 14, then both towns after that when my Dad moved. I went to Abbotsford Christian from Grades four to sevent, then graduated from M.E.I.
My world was always music.. in school… before school… after school. Piano lessons… to saxophone in band… to multiple choirs. Music is such a universal language… that’s what I love the most. No matter where you are, what you’re doing, how happy, sad, easy or hard things may seem, there is a song for it. So growing up for me wasn’t always easy when I think back — but as long as I had my music and my dog I was pretty good!!

What was it that drew you to a career in the country music industry?

I love real music. Not that other genres aren’t real, but country music just makes sense for me. What I’m singing has a meaning — it’s not just words leaving my mouth. When I sing I try to feel every word creating an energy or emotion that I can only hope the audience feels too. That’s my goal.

What does it mean to you to be nominated for these 7 BCCMA awards?
I don’t think there is one way to describe how it feels to be recognized is so many areas. I am just truly overwhelmed with all the support and love, and regardless if I win, my fans/ family and friends rock for taking me this far!

Who are you most looking forward to seeing perform?
Well the lineup of performers keeps going and going. This year is going to be an amazing group of B.C. and Canadian talent — and to be honest, I’m not sure I could just choose one. If I had to, I would say Jess Moskaluke. After winning female vocalist at the CCMA’s, she is killin it this year!! This girl has a great attitude, works hard and has an amazing voice to top it off. All the acts will be great…  and this show is not one to miss.
Editor’s note: Enter to win 2 tickets to the BCCMA Awards and dinner for 2 at the Cactus Club. Contest Closes at midnight on Oct. 13/14. ENTER NOW!!!

Any advice for aspiring country singers here in the Fraser Valley?
Don’t take no for an answer. I have heard ‘no’  lots. In other words,  it’s not going to come to you… you have to fight for it. The more you are out there, regardless of what anyone says, the more people start to believe you. You have to want it and it will show with how much effort you put in. Sitting on the couch will only get you Kraft dinner… that is if you’re lucky!
Do you have a favourite quote you’d like to share?
Some say the glass is half full, some say the glass is half empty, I say “Are you gonna drink that?
