Hurray, sunshine is on the forecast here in the Fraser Valley this weekend with highs of 21 on Saturday. Rather than spend the weekend cooped up at home where the kids will just make a mess, grab a coffee and head out to enjoy these 5 free things to do in the Fraser Valley this weekend.

1.Timms Community Centre Open House

The Timms Community Centre Open House is being held Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is your chance to go on a tour, try out as many free demo classes as you wish, enter to win raffle giveaways and prizes, partake in free games, arts and crafts and more. If you get hungry, there will be a youth fundraising BBQ onsite. Spring is my absolute favourite season to visit Bear Creek Park. In addition to the two massive playgrounds, we love to take a stroll through the Bear Creek Gardens. You’ll cross a little bridge over a salmon habitat stream into the gorgeous 5-acre gardens. Make sure to bring some change for the wishing pond and don’t forge to check out the bears having a tea party. There is so much to explore! I spent a lot of time here as a wee Valley gal. Bear Creek Park is located in Surrey at 13750 – 88th Avenue. 

3.Pack a Picnic and Head to Derby Reach

We are so lucky to live less than 5 minutes away from this Valley gem. Located on the banks of the Fraser River, this regional park has trails that wander past river and mountain views and through deeply shaded forest. Day use areas provide picnic tables and washrooms. Historic buildings, heritage apple trees and other reminders of pioneer days make this a memorable place. Park Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

4. Map Our Marshes Workshop

Head to Campbell Valley Regional Park (1558 200 St in Langley) April 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a free workshop. You’ll learn about different types of wetlands and how to map and protect them using GPS receivers, Google Earth, and B.C’s Community Mapping Network

5. Scope Out the Bates Motel

I can’t believe I still haven’t scoped out The Bates Motel set out in Aldergrove on 272nd Street yet. We are huge fans of the show, so this is something that has been on our bucket list for quite some time. I’ve seen lots of pics of fellow Valleyites who have been, and the building is the spitting image of the Bates Motel set in Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic Psycho.
