3 Things Thursday #3 ~ Frazzled in the Fraser Valley

It has been a crazy week filled with lots of ups and downs, but no shortage of humorous anecdotes.  I’m loving this weekly 3 Things Thursday feature because I get to share the little things that don’t usually make their way into my blog.

I often post about parties and glamorous events, but this feature is an insight into our real world. One where the pink laundry is always piled sky-high, the coffee is consistently  luke-warm and my yoga pants seem to keep shrinking.

This week’s edition has a bit of a frazzled theme, covering our recent TV appearance, a magical product designed for lazy moms and the stomach bug from the depths of HELL that rendered me helpless.

Okay, let’s do this:

1.The Day We Let Thousands of Strangers Into Our Living Room

It started off as a no good, horrible, very bad day.

My car wouldn’t start before school drop-off, my computer crashed in the midst of working on my Pink Laundry column for the Surrey Leader and my precious pup decided he was too posh to poop on the frosty grass. It seems he prefers the plush carpet… can’t exactly say I blame him.

Finally, my computer was up and running, so I checked my email.

As a blogger, you never know what you’re going to find in your inbox. It’s always pretty exciting — this one was no exception.

“Hello,

I’m a producer with CBC TV – we are doing a piece on Shopkins – and I saw your blog post on where to find it in the Fraser Valley.

Wondering if you had any of these Shopkins laying around? And if you would be available today for an interview with our host Andrew Chang about the craze?”

Turns out they wanted me to come downtown and chat in studio, which would be fine any other day… but not this day.
Remember, this was a no good, horrible, very bad day.
I still had yet to take a shower, was only half-way through my column and there was NO FRICKEN WAY  I was leaving Tucker in the house alone to destroy our carpets more than he already had.
After politely declining the invitation, they offered to send a camera man to our house instead.
Oh crap.
There were dishes piled on the counter, severed Barbie dolls scattered about courtesy of Tucker, piles of pink laundry waiting to be folded on the coffee table and I was one big frazzled, bloated and tired mess.
We’re talking massive bags under my tired orbs, greasy mom top-knot and Costco yoga pants that had seen better days.
I had just two hours to get my act, house and hair together. It was time to call in backup.
Thank GAWD my husband raced home from work to pick the girls up from school and help get the house in a presentable state. My mother in law also popped in, rolled up her sleeves, and helped us get ready.
Aside from Zoe wanting to flash the camera mere moments before it was time to tape the segment, I’d say it went pretty well. We look like a normal family and Molly was so excited to see herself on TV later that evening. You can view the video here. Scroll to 53 mins, 10 seconds to view it.

2. When You’re too Damn Lazy to Wash Your Hair

There is nothing I dread more than washing and styling my hair. No really, I’d rather clean toilets. It sucks!!!

My hair is so coarse and out of control that it takes a good hour to dry and style it these days. And that’s just when I’m going the lazy route and fluffing it under diffuser to bring out the curls.

Don’t get me started on blowing out my hair or straightening it. I usually end up drenched in sweat with a pulled shoulder.

That’s why when I do invest the time in styling, I want it to last more than a day.

Enter Batiste Dry Shampoo.

All you have to do is pop off the lid, spray at your roots and massage your scalp as though you were washing your hair. It will refresh your hair between washes, leaving it feeling cleaner with added body and texture. No water required.

The smell takes a little getting used to, but the price is pretty reasonable. Expect to pay between $7-9 at most retailers. It’s usually on sale at Winners in the beauty aisle. Warning: steer clear of the Batiste Dry Shampoo Extra Volume product – it took me weeks to get the sticky residue out of my hair.

With this product, I can get away with extending a blowout an extra three days.

3. A Mom Still Needs Her Mom

A nasty stomach bug rocked our little townhouse this past week and it wasn’t pretty.

You know that feeling when you’re so weak that it feels like moving a parked car just to get off the couch? Pre-parenthood, I would have stayed in my PJ’s all day, watching Jenny Jones (God, I miss that show), drinking copious amounts of hot tea and taking lots of naps and baths.

But that was then.

Daddy was working the late shift, so there was no other choice than to do the school pickup myself. I’m pretty sure I resembled Charlize Theron in the movie Monster as I rolled up to Molly’s school that afternoon, doing my best to hold in my lunch.

Fortunately my mom came to the rescue that evening, relieving me of my mommy duties. She poured me some tea, fixed dinner for the girls and even put them to bed.

Yes, even at 34, I still need my mom. A lot.

I phone her at least once a day and see her 3-5 times a week. I even drag her out to many blogging gigs, which she loves. She only lives five minutes away so it’s pretty convenient just to pop by.

I know many of you may live far away from your moms, or maybe they’ve passed away. I can’t imagine how difficult that is for you. How do you do it?  Who do you call on when you’re really sick for help?

And what about all you single moms out there?

Everyone will always need their mom! I am like you call my mom almost everyday. I just moved to the Valley 30 minutes from my mom who used to be like you 5 minutes away. It has been quite the adjustment for me.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one Michelle. I’ve often felt like I haven’t really grown up because I depend on her so much. Thirty minutes makes a big difference for sure!!! Thank you for your comment 🙂

I can comment not only on the single mom issue, but also as someone who lost her mom at a young age.
I’ve always been an introvert so wasn’t accustomed to confiding in my mom much, let alone daring to show vulnerability and need help. I’d call and ask her about recipes etc., and knew that she would always be there when I needed her.. Now I realized I robbed her of being needed, which must have made her feel somewhat unnecessary.

It was when I had children at 21 that all changed. I would call her about every little thing they did. She would giggle at the craziness and beam with pride.

That is what I miss the most… Having someone I knew loved them just about as much as I did to share them with. She was always eager to hear my stories and recaps of our days.

Now, as you well know my lovely Kristyl, I rely on a few good friends to share all my prideful boastings with, whether they like it or not.

I’m still not good at asking for help, but I honestly don’t know what I’d do without those friends who let me go on about my kids and make me feel that it matters to them.

I’m finally learning to let people help 🙂

Hello there Kelley, thank you for stopping by! I can’t imagine how hard that must be for you, especially around the holidays. She’d be so proud of how self sufficient you are and how your daughters turned out just like you. Glad you’re letting people in, including yours truly xo

Love this line: One where the pink laundry is always piled sky-high, the coffee is consistently luke-warm and my yoga pants seem to keep shrinking. – totally the mom truth! That’s awesome about the shopkins piece and that everything came together! And yes, we always need our moms, no matter how hold. Loved this frazzled edition of 3 Things Thursday 🙂

Thank you so much Salma! As I’m replying, I’m am once again sipping lukewarm coffee, wearing my yoga pants that have ‘magically’ shrunk and haven’t touched that pile of pink laundry, lol.
